The Wishbone Chair was designed by Hans J Wegner, the man who is affectionately known as ‘The Master of the Chair’. Holding a special position in design history, it has been in production since its inception in 1950. Inspired by a portrait of a Chinese emperor and his throne, its curved form is characterised by the Y-shaped back rest.
The combination of beautiful wood and the tactile, hand-woven papercord seat embodies the manufacturer’s philosophy: ensuring that the best materials are worked by only the finest craftspeople.
The Superleggera Chair is elegant, minimal and lightweight. Designed by Gio Ponti, widely regarded as a master of design, the chair is the result of a creative collaboration between designer and entrepreneur. The chair has been expertly refined through decades of hard work, originally inspired by the work of the furniture artisans of the Ligurian coast. In its latest edition, the chair is available in natural ash, black lacquered or with a white frame, a classic and beautiful addition to any interior.
Designed by Charles & Ray Eames in 1950, the DSW Chair has got true staying power. The couple explored the idea of a one-piece plastic seat shell moulded to the contours of the human body, making drawings and prototypes over a number of years before they reached their conclusion. The DSW Chair was one of the very first mass-produced plastic chairs in the history of design. Its multifunctional personality has contributed to its formidable reputation – switch out the wooden base for the metal, making a sculptural yet elegant form.
The Fredericia J39 Chair was designed by Børge Mogensen in 1947 as part of ‘The People’s Collection’ of furniture, acquisitioned in the 1950s by Fredericia. Based on the philosophy of folk furniture from the Mediterranean, Mogensen wanted to create a chair with a tranquil and unpretentious aesthetic – something that would, inevitably, be timeless. A trained cabinet maker, his designs favoured more traditional materials: solid wood, papercord and brass components, creating furniture that is modest as well as breathtakingly beautiful.
One of the best selling chairs of all time, the Series 7 Chair by Arne Jacobsen is instantly recognisable. Designed in 1955 but made famous in 1963 in a photograph of Christine Keeler shot by Lewis Morley, the chair has seen huge success with over five million estimated to have been sold. Made of only two pieces – form-pressed plywood and metal legs, the chair is elegant in its simplicity. Now existing in a myriad of different colours and wood finishes, the chair has evolved to suit the modern home. Its lightweight form makes it an ideal dining chair – stackable, so that when more guests than expected turn up at your door, they too can have a seat at the table.
GamFratesi designed the Beetle Chair for Gubi in 2012. Inspired by the anatomy of a beetle with its hard shell and exterior patterning, the result is a beautifully formed dining chair with unrivalled comfort. Available in several variations: fully upholstered, front upholstered and unupholstered, and in many different fabric options, the chair is as adaptable as it is beautiful – achieving cult status.
With origins in France, the House of Bourbon was a dynasty known for its class and luxury. BOURBON Accent Chair embodies this opulence through its button-tufted inner back, rich cotton velvet and ebony wood veneer legs. This fabric chair makes up any refined ambience. It’s part of the collection of the Portuguese brand BRABBU, inspired by nature and by its beautiful imperfections.
The About A Chair AAC20 conveys a formal expression through its strong and balanced steel swivel base. The About A Chair series was designed by Hee Welling, based on a philosophy that prides itself on creating simple and useful objects. The chair’s curved shell and centred base provide a symmetrical balance, whilst the wide range of upholstery and colour options allow the design to be easily adapted to your requirements.
The Tulip Chair, designed in 1957 available as both a side chair and armchair, is an iconic design by Eero Saarinen. Both futuristic and classic, yet somehow retaining its organic form, the chair is perfect for a modern interior, epitomising the social change that happened in the late 1950s and early 1960s. With a moulded aluminium base and fibreglass reinforced plastic shell in either black or white, the chair is instantly recognisable as a design classic.
A true statement chair, ergonomic yet with organic qualities, the Panton Chair is a design classic. The product of years of collaboration between Vernor Panton and Vitra, it was released in 1967 and amassed a cult following quickly. Now available in the classic version (with shine) as well as the standard version and children’s version, the chair is a colourful statement that has proven itself to be a timeless piece of furniture history.
